Students study management style
of St. Francis Orphanage House
“We’re really impressed of the management style of St. Francis House. Everything is spic and span!”
That’s the common impression made by students of the Western Mindanao State University’s Mass Communication Journalism 3 class during their recent educational tour.
The St. Francis House was one of the places visited to observe its total quality management (TQM) practices.
The orphanage center was established in Pasonanca, Zamboanga City in 1987 and has helped hundreds of orphans and poor children not only from Zamboanga City but also from other parts of the region like Basilan, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga Sibugay.
Fr. Arthur Winikoff established the St. Francis House through a foundation as a way of helping the city government to take care of abandoned and orphaned children.
Todate, the St. Francis House has almost 90 wards who are given free shelter, food, education, clothings and other needs. Many of these wards are being sent to the Pasonanca Elementary School for the gradeschoolers, Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial High School for the highschoolers, and other public colleges and universities for those in the tertiary level.
Marissa Basilio, St. Francis House’s caretaker, said they even have now a student in WMSU’s College of Law. She said many already finished their education and are now having their own work and families.
Basilio toured the visiting students to the different amenities and facilities of the over 20-year old orphanage center in Zamboanga City.
